Ones to Watch: Breel Embolo
Euro 2016 could be a key tournament for this teenage sensation. Many of Europe’s biggest clubs will be keeping an eye on whether the Basel striker can reproduce his club form on the big stage.
The 19-year-old Cameroon-born striker was the subject of a €27 million bid from Wolfsburg back in January, which was quickly rejected by the Swiss club. Basel firmly believe they have one of Europe’s hottest young prospects on their books. Manager Urs Fischer has shown a lot of belief in his starlet – never more so than when he led the line in their Champions League group stage games against Liverpool and Real Madrid.
After a triumphant season in the Swiss Super League – in which Embolo contributed 13 goals and 9 assists – the forward has shown willingness to create opportunities for his team mates alongside his deadly eye for goal. His immense power, strength and explosive pace are enough to scare any defence, and many pundits have compared his talent to that of Paul Pogba, Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba. The Swiss teen is a striker to be reckoned with, particularly at such a young age.
The European stage is set, and could prove the launchpad for Embolo's career at the highest level.
